Project Helping Hand: Improving Hospitals
and Health Care in Afghanistan
 |
Heraat hospital, March of 2002.
A nurse checks the
pulse of a comatose woman, severely injured by a landmine.
Since there was no blood pressure device in the women's ward,
the doctors were unable to check the blood pressure and other
vital signs of this critically wounded patient. |
The goal of this project
is to revitalize existing hospitals and clinics outside Kabul through
the collection, transfer and distribution of new and surplus medical
equipment and supplies. This is a joint effort by the American Hospitals
Association (AHA) and the Global Watch Group (GWG). This is a pilot
project, and the first in a series of projects to revitalize healthcare
facilities throughout Afghanistan.
Why not Kabul? Currently,
most international healthcare and non-governmental organizations
(NGOs) are focused on improving healthcare facilities in Kabul.
Therefore, little international assistance is directed to the healthcare
infrastructure in other provinces and hard to reach areas.
