Project Helping Hand: Improving Hospitals and Health Care in Afghanistan

nurse checking the pulse of a woman severely injured by a landmine

Heraat hospital, March of 2002.
A nurse checks the pulse of a comatose woman, severely injured by a landmine. Since there was no blood pressure device in the women's ward, the doctors were unable to check the blood pressure and other vital signs of this critically wounded patient.

The goal of this project is to revitalize existing hospitals and clinics outside Kabul through the collection, transfer and distribution of new and surplus medical equipment and supplies. This is a joint effort by the American Hospitals Association (AHA) and the Global Watch Group (GWG). This is a pilot project, and the first in a series of projects to revitalize healthcare facilities throughout Afghanistan.

Why not Kabul? Currently, most international healthcare and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are focused on improving healthcare facilities in Kabul. Therefore, little international assistance is directed to the healthcare infrastructure in other provinces and hard to reach areas.
